This media is the finest biological media available and although it costs a little more - it will outlast all other similar products.
For best results mix layers of Matala using a coarse layer first for large solids removal followed by denser layers for fine debris. Due to its unique material design, Matala media is much more rigid than traditional polyester media. This makes it easier to clean but does not allow it to be rolled up like other media. Matala mats are 1½" thick.
Both Green and Black clean out very easily by simply shaki
ng the pieces out before draining the sump.
When you use the Black or Green Matala® for solids filtering you may use the garden hose to spray clean them. The dirt falls off very easily.
A good biofilter needs a lot of surface area with open spaces between for good aerated water flow. A high surface area is useless if the passageways are so small that water flow cannot penetrate.
