These leaves can be boiled for faster tannins release, however you can just leave 1 leaf in a 5 gallon tank of water and within a few days, you'll see the water change.. Don't be alarmed, the water will be a yellow/brown hue when tannins are released into the water. This is different than a dirty aquarium as the water should still be clear, not foggy. The leaves will float and eventually fall onto the aquarium floor.
Some betta fish enjoy creating bubble nests under the leaves. :)
